>Or are cell phones just >cheaper >in England?? I don't know that they were when Press Gang was made, but when I was last there (in March of 96), they definitely were. I was utterly amazed at the number of people in London who had them. Everywhere I went, there were people walking down the street, talking on the ubiquitous cell phones. I asked my friend in Enfield, with whom I was staying, and he said that there had been a cell phone price war in Britain, that the companies were practically giving them away, and that what I was seeing was the result. He had heard that London had the largest cell phone to inhabitants ratio of any city in the world. I didn't see anything to make me doubt that. I was surprised, I have to admit. I've had several British visitors over the years, who invaribly make comments to me like "Your refrigerator is so large," "Your washer and dryer are so large, and I only have a combined unit," "I can't believe you have three televisions, when you live alone," "Everything is so inexpensive here," "You Americans are so ______" (fill in blank with spoiled, prosperous, wasteful, etc.) So it disturbed my world view a bit when I learned that there was an electronic gadget which was cheaper and more widely owned in Britain than it was in the States. -Chris -- T H E P R E S S G A N G M A I L I N G L I S T By default, pressing 'reply' will send mail back to the list, not to the author of the message you're replying to.
