I think Lynda had to have Donald's trust before she could put the idea to him - as he would have to believe she would not "dob him in" as soon as they got out to the police. If she'd told him before he trusted her, then he might have dismissed the idea out of hand, and then she'd have blown her trump card (as she saw it). Incidentally, Lynda's great plan would never have worked - in hostage situations, the police don't let people who get out of the building go straight away, as they're well aware of the possibility that the abductors may pose as hostages.
