I would say prat is common in British English, and fairly well known in Australian English (this might be changing, though, with the increasing amount of American shows on TV here ... ). I don't know if there's an equivalent in the USA - the ABC shows current affairs, news, some sports (usually not the major ones, because the commercial networks outbid them), Australian-made drama, documentaries, and quite a few shows from British TV - Press Gang is just one example.
