>> Well, I don't *think* there's a gov't-funded one - but PBS is >non-commercial >> isn't it? (Crystal? Kevin?). > >PBS is non-commercial. I just took a class which explained all about >PBS but I don't remember how it is funded. We don't have any >government-funded channels over here. Everything is owned by the >big-bad corporations :=DE > PBS is funded by donations from the Public (i.e. Canadians and USians). They run pledge breaks, for instance my PBS station (WCFE-57-Mountain Lake) recently showed 2 hrs of Mounty Python's Flying Circus broken up with pleas from the station to the Public to become "Members" of the station by sending $40 (US) or more with gifts to encourage higher donations (e.g. when RD VII was playing it was a Red Dwarf T-shirt for the $100 membership level).=20 Actually I think it is classed as a charity (tax credits are available in both the USA and Canada), though I would considered it more of a= Co-operative. The PBS station that beams into Qu=E9bec City shows Chef!, Yes Minister,= MPFC, Red Dwarf, Eastenders, Faith in the Future but not (despite my begging, I should probably send them money with a begging letter) Press Gang or Second Thoughts. In theory PBS is owned by the Public (thus Public Broadcasting Station). Oliver P.S. CBC [1] and RC [2] (are the Canadian equivalent of ABC and BBC) funded by the government directly like in Australia (and being cut as brutally). [1] Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (I think, Ruth probably knows) [2] Radio Canada - French language station, broadcasts in all parts of= Canada. -- T H E P R E S S G A N G M A I L I N G L I S T By default, pressing 'reply' will send mail back to the list, not to the author of the message you're replying to.
