Hmm, well I am a fan and happen to be one of the five or so yanks who have actually seen much less heard of the show >Isn't Stars kind of a futurist Press Gang? I guess it could be but I don't really see it. I tend to think its more similar to something like Cheers - very dialogue driven with well thought out situations. Julia and Spike kind of have this neurotic love/hate relationship full of the witty barbs and one liners that made Sam and Diane famous. Kenny would be Norm Peterson, the loveable good guy lush without a nasty bone in his body. Fraz would be Woody, well intentioned, thorough and diligent, but as Lynda would be prone to say "not exactly God's gift to the human intellect." I don't know, Collin might be Frazier - brilliant and creative (money wise) but always kind of the odd man out of the group, often put down or left out or whatever. Maybe Julie is the Kirstie Alley character Rebecca Howe, you know, sort of shallow, can't ever seem to hold down a real relationship with a guy. These ideas are probably stretching it a bit but it just goes to show you can read about whatever you want into comparisons like these. Also I think (at least parts of) Press Gang would work well as a radio script. Like the Cheers bar, Press Gang tends to focus primarily on one central locale, that of the newsroom. You could turn the picture off completely leaving just the audio and probably still get a pretty good visual of the story. Its that good.
