Well I managed to get totally behind with my mail, so here's my two cents on the best of the last two weeks mail... Matt Saunders said : > Aussies seem to be more discerning in what they watch! > Doesn't stop you lot churning out crappy soaps like Neighbours > and Home and Away but we'll forgive you for that. :-) That's true, although I don't know anyone (in Aus) who has watched Neighbours regularly since 1988. In fact, its only still being made because of the demand for it in the UK and Germany. Quality Australian TV has definitely been lacking since the demise of the Flying Doctors (1990). > I only found out about Series Five a few days before it happened (when > the new Radio Times came out) so seeing it was a nice bonus, though I > did think it'd finished... Well after screening Day Dreams for the first time in '92, the host of the ABC's afternoon show host said something along the lines of "never fear PG fans there will be more new episodes next year" except it was a very long year until they finally screened in 1995! The wait was so long, that I began to wonder whether they were imagining a fifth series, I mean Day Dreams did seem like a pretty convincing ending. >Hrm, well I'm not too keen on "Windfall" - the 100 pound note stuff / >Colin killing Lynda's pets etc is funny, but the episode as a whole >I'm not too keen on. There are others too, but it's been so long since >I saw them it'd be unfair for me to slag them off :-) Yeah, actually I forgot about that episode - But I think the reason it was lacking PG's usual brillance was because it focussed too much on Julie -the character without character - or at least without any depth. >"At Last A Dragon" (watched it on Sunday) - the final scene. They > kiss, and we all thought that was the end of the episode, but there's > the magical moment with the closing gate and the streetlight, y'know > what I mean... faaaaantastic. Pure Magic ... > "Head And Heart" - the first scene (after the titles) when Colin tries > to chat up the school secretary... "It not that I think you're dying, > though if you *were* dying, I'd go to your funeral. I'd love to!" > I don't roll around the floor laughing very often but I did then... Colin always seemed to have me rolling around in laughter. May said : >"Going Back To Jaspar Street": When the infant Lynda Day tells the old >lady that Kenny "follows me, he *always* follows me" and we cut to the > teenage Lynda being followed by good , old Kenny ! Love it, I think we could all use a Kenny in our lives - it was never quite the same after he left . > Also in "Quarter to Midnight" (?) when Julie and Spike tells Lynda to > ring Colin's phone if she is in trouble. SO she does and Colin who > thinks someone is out to get him flies out of the news room. Classic Colin, always taking things to extremes, somewhat reminiscent of Walter Edison's funeral and the pink bunny suit. > Of course, I also love the scene in "holding On" (?) when Lynda is > behind the couch and Spike's attempting to convince Zoe (?) that > nothings wrong with his hand. Only to be outdone by the moment when Spike is trying to tell Lynda how he really feels during the sound test with Fraz and Sarah listening from the van. Murray : > LYNDA : "you named yourself after the dog form Tom and Jerry?" > SPIKE: "You had to find out sometime." Just Brilliant. Matt M said : > When Lynda slags off that guy and his cat puppet on the Crazy Stuff > show. Talk about a firecracker! Lynda at her best ! Dave said: > But what about Beverley Hills 90210 and Melrose Place? They're > pretty good (though obviously in a totally different league to Press > Gang) I don't think I could ever call BH 90210 pretty good - pretty unrealistic is more like it ! I always found those (30 yr old) kids really annoying. I have to admit to watching Melrose though - but that's only cause of Rob Estes - is that guy drop dead gorgeous or what ! > The US's next-door neighbours have a pretty good track record - I'd > say The Kids of Degrassi Street and Degrassi Junior High are almost > up there with Press Gang for brilliance, but before you start flaming > me, I strongly emphasise the 'almost', but I'd say they're at least > in the same league... I always thought The Kids of Degrassi Street, Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High were preaching youth issues at me. I mean every second episode started with one of those parental guidance warnings. At least when PG dealt with issues they were dealt with with maturity and let you make up your own mind. Although let me just say that Lynda calls it just perfectly in There Are Crocodiles when she says that people were warned about drug use. Any way, why all this talk about other kids TV shows - from what I've seen most of the people on this list hardly qualify as kids anymore. Personally I appreciate Press Gang a lot more now then when I was younger, and always thought it would have done even better in a later more adult time slot. You underestimate PG's strength when you call it a purely kids TV show. And Matt M, Kenny definitely says "But Lynda" even if he might have felt like saying "F*** Lynda" a few times. On the look-a-like issue I think that Gabrielle Anwar (Sam Black) looks a lot like Isabella Rossilini, what do you think ??? Just a quick questions for you owners of the PG books. Do they ever tell you what was written about Lynda on the common room wall that made Spike beat that guy up - cant remember the episode title off the top of my head. One last little bit of trivia. If you ever want a good laugh, take a look at a very young, very nerdy looking Paul Reynolds in the movie Little Shop Of Horrors during the 'Someplace that's Green' dream sequence, playing Seymour's son.
