(I'm near Wolverhampton). > Am I the only fan who started my addiction at the age of > 20 ? No, I'm exactly the same... in fact I was older! I was 19 when the show started, and as I had gone up to university the previous autumn, obviously didn't see it (having long-since abandoned so-called "children's" TV as not worth bothering with). At the start of my second year, a friend told me how good the programme was (being a year younger, he'd still been in the sixth form during series one, and thus caught it) but I still wasn't convinced enough to actually watch it. It took Steve over two years to persuade me to watch PG, and I saw my first episode over Christmas 1991 (it was "At Last a Dragon"). I was totally and utterly hooked from then on in, and am now a much bigger fan than he is! So, officially, I was 22 when I became a fan! <Yikes... where have all the years gone?> > I received much ridicule from my college friends who remain > unconvinced to this day and still claim that it's a kids show!! > I suffered quite a lot of this as well, particularly before the advent of PG fandom. Fortunately, a lot of my friends are pretty open-minded and at least gave the programme a chance (as I had done myself), but there are always the doubters who just can't get over the CITV tag. Usually those who slag it off have never actually watched the programme. And looking at the conventions, everyone there was in the 15-30 age bracket which tells you a lot about PG's audience. Richmond F&TV were certainly aware of the twentysomething factor (in fact they used it extensively in their attempts to persuade companies to finance the more adult PG tele-film) and Sandra commented on many occasions that they liked the afternoon slot, because they could get away with more at that time in many ways (as long as it was sensitively handled). But PG was always designed to be a "youth" programme, rather than explicitly a "children's" programme. Personally, I thought the 6.30-7.00 slot was perfect for PG... in some other countries, it is shown at 8pm, which would be even better! > It's great to find that there is a whole group of people who still > remember the episode titles and some outrageously funny scenes. > Yes, this is an excellent list, very friendly and always entertaining. > I'm surprised to find so many Australians on the list. Even though it hasn't received much exposure in the US outside the TV convention circuit, there is still a relatively large fan following (Hi Chris!) which shows how powerful the programme's appeal really is! > Hence had to wait until I returned to see > the excellent 'Head and Heart', 'Food Love and Insecurity', > 'Windfall'and 'There are Crocodiles'. Unfortunately, Channel 4's long association with PG was ended because Dawn Airey (who had axed it on CITV, allegedly for its continued controversial stance, according to Sandra) moved there as their controller of youth programming. She's now in a senior position at Channel 5, so don't expect any more terrestrial repeats on there either! Nice to see it appearing somewhere though, of course, although messing with the transmission order is crazy given the highly sophisticated internal continuity. Regards, Ade _| Adrian E.C.
