Hi Lucy, On Sun, 20 Apr 1997, you wrote: > Thank you for the kind greetings > You're welcome. > I'm happy to find a kindred spirit - even older than myself :) > Now, now, that's enough of that <grin>. Not *that* much older (27 and 6 months to be precise)! > I'm impressed that At Last a Dragon was your first episode, an excellent > one which I could watch anytime at the drop of a hat and a quick rifle > through the video collection Agreed; although I have tremendous problems ever deciding on favourite episodes, I do have a single favourite (There Are Crocodiles) and a favourite season (the second). I've probably watched every PG episode more than 50 times, but in the case of At Last a Dragon, it's probably nearer 100! - though it must have been strange to later > see the lead up to the big date in the reruns ! > Unfortunately, I was in the maddening position of not being able to see any other episodes, as I saw ALAD about a week after season two had finished its repeat on Channel 4. Obviously I caught season three's repeat and season four's first run, but everything before The Big Hello was pretty much a mystery to me for quite a while. In those days, I didn't know of any fans with episodes on tape (or indeed, many other fans full stop) so quickly resigned myself to never being able to see the first two seasons at all. Even worse, the other odd episode my friend had recorded was the first part of "Something Terrible"... the thought of never being able to see the ending to that was infuriating! There was quite a big fan following on the net at that time and I was able to glean quite a bit of information from people on the newsgroups, but this was still no substitute for the real thing. Fortunately, a few months later I met the crowd who later went on to run the conventions via a mutual friend, and the rest is history. I was able to borrow seasons one and two and watch them all in context. It didn't spoil the build-up at all having seen the date in ALAD already... in fact, if anything it made it more enjoyable knowing what the future had in store! > My friends are in the unthinkable position of having seen the show but > not been converted, Difficult to imagine, but it does happen (a few of my friends are the same, but that may be because of my endlessly going on about PG). I suppose like all TV programmes it's not necessarily to everyone's taste, but it is infuriating when you think noone understands why you like a so-called "kid's" show so much! > though one did break a smile at some of Colin's > antics the other day. They can't get over their instinctive dislike of > Dexter Fletcher for some reason - It must be that fake accent :) One of my friends recently watched PG for the first time (after suffering six years of my insane rantings on the subject, he thought it was about time he saw some episodes) and, though he really liked the programme, he also voiced that criticism, saying it was hard to watch anything that featured such a jarring accent! I'm determined to keep him watching, though. After all, Spike is a highly developed character, but he probably doesn't show his depths properly until season two (The Rest of My Life being an obvious example). > Though I have no complaints about him - he once sent me an autographed > photo - the only one of the cast to reply to my mad letters even if it > took him a couple of years !! > Agreed; I've met him on three or four occasions (on one, spending several hours in his company, during which he kept us all thoroughly entertained!), and he's always struck me as a really nice chap. Certainly some of his stories are amazing... you'd be astonished at some of the luminaries he's worked with in his career, not to mention some of the behind the scenes things he told me about PG!
