I thought this too, however I was also glad that they changed the "look"
and also that they changed the decorating and paint in the newsroom, I
think the more profession look from series 3 onwards goes well with the
fully professional nature of the JG.

I don't remember the Hymns at all... can someone identify this ep?
I think there's a good juxtaposition in the early eps which shows the team
at some times acting very much like children, and at others very much like
adults. I think this seems to be brought out a lot in the school scenes,
and I like it cos it again shows them growing up.

In terms of tightness of plot and writing, I thought the fifth series did
lack something, but I was glad that they included it, cos Day Dreams for
me did not have the punch that the other series end eps had, i.e, just a
bit of ambiguity tossed in at the end ("I think"). compare this to the
ends of series two, three and five, where the finale was built up more
over the episode, and also the series as a whole.
