i read a translation of the monkey story once and i found that it was
actually pretty similar. i mean, it wasn't exactly the same, but some
of the adventures in it related to episodes in the series. The one thing
that i remember most is that i was really disappointed that the series
didn't finish. In the book they finally reach India (i think - it was
a long time ago) or reach their goal, anyway, but in the series they
definitely don't.
on the side, when i was in Japan about 7 years ago, i was watching the
"wacky" New Years game shows that they had (i couldn't understand a
word, however), and i swear by my mother's left toe that the host of
the show was none other than monkey himself! of course he was much older
and incredibly skinny, but who could forget that face? :)
cheerio,
