I think the whole idea behind Spikes initial move back to America
(post-season 2) was that Spike wanted commitment - or at least to know that
Lynda wanted to take the relationship seriously.

I agree that the fights in season five were more frequently ideological (as
opposed to flirtatious/fun/frivolous) than in previous series, eg the
argument about the "Mr Winters" story and about "Whatsisname" in "T.A.C.",
but I think that, while Spike was certainly angry about Lynda's reaction to
<the events of T.A.C.>, it didn't necessarily mean a complete breakdown of
the relationship (not in the long term, anyway) - and I think Spike covered
the matter of whether or not he loved her in the last scene of "T.A.C."
(although I know there are list members who would argue this point on the
grounds of the debatable nature of the last scene (sorry if I'm sounding
cryptic, I'm trying to avoid spoiling :) ).
 
...and don't we all argue sometimes with people close to us despite (or
because of) loving them... ;)
