It took me a while to get what was going on there - I didn't follow it
the first time I saw it. (I haven't seen this ep. for a while, so
forgive my vague descriptions!)

Just a while before this, he's having a conversation with someone (can't
quite remember who) about how they're nearly finished highschool and how
Lynda's going to have this big career, etc, and then where will Spike
be? (ie. don't bother trying to start anything with her.) So Spike, in a
moment of weakness, lets Lynda talk him into leaving with her (and so
destroying her career prospects/networking opportunities). When she
thanked him for it, he couldn't cope.

Related: Later that night, when she goes off to talk to some Media Mogul
type person about where her career is going, you hear some glass
breaking and Spike says "It wasn't *my* heart" and nicks off.
