Okay - firstly, if you haven't seen Chance Is a Fine Thing, my reply may
be a /little/ bit of a spoiler. SO here's three lines of space to enjoy
while you decide if you want to go on...
I thought the chance meeting was really good in the context of the
Kenny's emphasis on destiny. I suppose according to Kenny's final
theory of the cosmos, the moral is that if he'd been meant to meet her
properly, he would have; although you could say that the incident was
him missing the chance fate threw him. In following the latter way of
thinking, I always found it rather symbolic that the possible "reason"
(Iknow this could be argued) that Kenny didn't talk more to the girl was
that he was on the phone to Lynda. I remember thinking "poor old Kenny
- his opportunities go begging again due to his friendship with Lynda".
You may remember that the reason he lost track of the girl in the first
place was he was sorting out the Spike and Lynda situation.
Actually (gee this is getting longer than I thought), in terms of the
overall main plot of PressGang up to that point (ie Spike and Lynda -
will they ever get together), Kenny's is the most noble of sacrifices.
He "gives up"*[1] his chance at a relationship which seems perfect*[2]
in order to resolve the problems of his two best friends*[3] and, in
doing so, the anxiety of all of those who had been following "this dopey
love story since Page One (sic)".
Comments awaited,
Murray
*Footnotes:
(1) - While the sacrifice only becomes apparent in hindsight, it is a
sacrifice he makes nonetheless.
(2) - I'm assuming that, the uncertainties of life notwithstanding, we
can agree that the Dublin girl was always written as Kenny's perfect
match).
(3) - While it is certainly never mentioned who Kenny's "second-best
friend" might be, I am willing to back up this assertion to an extent if
it is wanted.
