In my opinion, it seems that Spike has been chasing Lynda forever....
and when he finally gets together with her, she's... well... not half-
hearted exactly, but he'd built it up to be this fantastic thing, and as
you say, he's giving more than he's getting back. After his near-death
experience, he's realised that he loves Lynda, and this is more serious
than previous relationships. He needs to know that she feels the same,
or he could be wasting days of a life that's not going to last forever.
