Based on "Friendly Fire," it'd certainly have made a lot more
sense if Sullivan had returned for series 5. David Collings
is, of course, a criminally underused actor, but that doesn't
necessarily mean he *should* have been in those episodes! I'm not
sure if his absence was discussed at the convention or not (my most
vivid memory was sharing a train carriage with Kelda Holmes on the
way back to London...I'm *so* easily pleased...), but...I dunno, I've
a *vague* recollection that he said he was surprised *not* to be
asked back. But my memory's not what it was - it's equally possibly
he was busy on "The Bill." Was he still doing that when series 5
was made?
As for Sullivan's marital status, don't forget he was still
unattached during the cocktail party in "At Last A Dragon" (although
as Spike lost his £5, I think we can reasonably assume that he wasn't
unattached by the end of it). I get the impression that the point
of "Head and Heart" is that Winters is jeopardising a long term
marriage for a relationship with his secretary (? is this ever
explicitly stated?), so a three/four year relationship wouldn't have
the same impact. Although, as you say, no doubt Moffatt would've
worked *something* out. He's smart like that...
Loadsa love and needlessly complicated e-mails,
David.
