I realise everyone's had their say on this so it's a little indulgent
to start a new thread on it, but I'm interested in the role of secondary
characters (I'm including Sarah, Frazz and Tiddler in this list).
I think it's part of what makes PG so good - the real ability of the
secondary characters to deliver a line well. It's something
Frazz/Mmoloki made an art of and Sarah/Kelda also pulled off well. Her
role as "straight man" to her rather interesting ensemble of workmates
is, in my view, a significant contributer to the success of the other
characters. By way of example I mean Colin's antics are funnier when
there is someone relatively normal to respond to them.
Unfortunately this ability to play second fiddle (and acting with
restraint is a hard task which requires a skilled and unselfish actor)
also meant in Sarah-Kelda's case that she was not strong enough to carry
a whole episode herself. This is a shame, but not all Kelda-Sarah's
fault. It's pretty hard to compete with Spike, Lynda and Colin (his
eyebrows alone could carry an episode :) )
