Hey, guess what!
I just grabbed a copy of a student paper/magazine (Grok) from Perth's
Curtin Uni, and found an article about shows about highschool, and it
talks about PG!
It does note that, unlike say Degrassi, Grange Hill, Heartbreak High
etc, PG is not strictly a high school show, but there's a nice big
write-up about it anyway!
The article starts out with comments about how TV high schools make the
impossible possible, citing examples such as:
"a) Student Councillors actually have some say in the running of the
school.
b) The school magazine is a widely read publication.
c) Enemies can become friends in five days.
d) Canteen food is edible."
The intro also reveals that the author (Marianna Longmire... obviously a
writer of great taste) would, if her PG tape was erased, "turn into an
extraordinarily introverted individual, wandering the streets of Perth
with a knofe in <her> pocket. <She>'d be the type of person who reads
the White Pages and ...thinks about things" (Shades of Colin scaring
off Malcolm Bullivant (sp?) there, eh viewers?)
The article also has a lot of stuff about Degrassi Junior and Degrassi
High, which it rates as the best High School show (I suspect from the
authors hints that this is as a result of it's overtly highschool status
rather than because it is considered to be a better show in general than
PG).
The magazine is not on the web (for reasons best known to the makers of
the mag it is only put on the web about two years after each edition is
printed) but sometime after Wednesday (I have a talk to write before
then) I will ask for a text-file copy of the article (if the editor is
amenable, which, students (and this fellow in particular from what I've
read of his) being friendly sort, I'm sure he will be) and send it to
the list. If any Perthians happen to be friendly with Ms Longmire or
Simon Collins (the ed.) feel free to ask them about it, otherwise I'll
contact Mr Collins on Thursday.
Anyway, I will see what I can do about getting the article (they *did*
after all, steal the PG photo they use from Matt's website (it's the
Spike one, with the caption "Press Gang's Spike, a spunk, apparently" (I
should mention here, ever-mindful of the different interpretations of
the word "spunk" across the globe, that a spunk is, in this sense, a
good-looking member of the desired sex, and not a bodily emission :)
))).
Well, I must get back to writing my talk... hope I have not been too
muddle-brained with my sentences... I was jelly-brained with tiredness
four hours ago and all that's changed now is that I have enough caffiene
in me to keep me from typing with my face. :)
