Well, Spike and Lynda were so obviously set up together, it is hard to consider any other way it could go. But not THAT hard. After all, there was a Zoe in season three, and a string of lucky winners of Spike Thomson in the first two seasons. (In Charlotte Rendell's case, some luckier than others.) Nothing much was ever made of anyone on the news team ever being infatuated with Spike (With the exception of Tiddler, that is, but she wasn't old enough to be a serious player.) for the simple reason that Lynda would never tolerate any such nonsense. Sarah would never backstab a friend to get a guy. That's not her style, even with a faithless friend like Lynda Day. With Sarah gone from the paper, that obstacle disappears. I think you can also make a case for the friendship of Sarah and Lynda breaking up after the Gazette, too. If Sarah ever pursues journalism as a career, she and Lynda may well find themselves in competition at some future point, and any competitor of Lynda's is someone marked for possible death or disfigurement at her hands.
