Was the "new look Gaz" part of Colin's pitch when he stood for
editor, though? I'm not sure it was; although having said that I
guess it was pretty obvious that with Colin in charge the Gazette
would go a tad down market. Or is that just me speaking with the
benefit of hindsight?

I'm not sure that was ever an issue. Nobody expected Lynda to
come back to the Gazette at all. It was only Spike's trip to
Sherrington (with a copy of the Gaz) that persuaded her to return
(and would she have seen it otherwise? Possibly, but I think it's
Billy Homer who points out that "she's not likely to pop into a
newsagents to buy a reminder."). Mind you, that'd one of my big
gripes against "Shouldn't I Be Taller" anyway - Lynda's been thrown
completely off kilter by the suicide of David Jefford, and yet
returns because she discovers that Colin's turned the Gazette into a
tabloid - hardly the most shocking of revelations, under the
circumstances. I suppose that reveals a darker side to Lynda's
character - rather than make any serious attempt to come to
terms with her feelings, she'd rather just throw herself into her
work.
My two penn'orth, for what it's worth.
David.
