I'd never thought of it that way but it makes a lot of sense. Especially as they spent all that time on the way to the party talking about the parties Spike had been at ("Sarah's birthday party, Julie's birthday party, Kevin's birthday party") but Linda had missed. Given how good he was at socialising Spike was probably the only one who could slay that dragon for Linda.
