PBS gets its funding in various ways. Probably the most obvious are through
membership pledges by regular old citizens like myself, who has supported PBS
for several years. They also get a great deal of funding from private
corporations and philanthropic organizations, as well as some funding from the
government. PBS is sort of non-commercial, at least when there isn't a pledge
drive on. They don't interrupt programming for commercials, but you will see
(for example) Sesame Street, brought to you by Meijer (a local grocery outlet)
and then a quick fifteen second advert. The rest of the show will be
uninterrupted. During pledge breaks, all bets are off, and then they air ten
minutes of show and ten minutes of begging. I'm amazed this concept works as
well as it does, though I wonder if people don't actually pledge money just to
make them go away. Shades of Colin and his Exam Relief Kit!
