Much of Lynda's unwillingness to tell Spike those three little words 'I love you' are pure bluster. She does love Spike and has since AT LAST A DRAGON. Unfortunately, Lynda Day is very uncertain of what that means and very scared of her own feelings and where this is all going with the paper's future, her future, and ultimately Spike's future as well. She's not willing to ask Spike to not go to America because she's not sure she and Spike will work out in the end, and letting go of Spike is something she does out of kindness to him, however difficult that is for both of them. Spike's inability to let go of Lynda by returning to England (Zoe or no) ends Lynda's altruism and all bets are off. Returning ultimately proves to Lynda that Spike will never be able to leave, and therefore can be strung along as necessary until she's sure in her heart she's following the right path and doing the right thing. Ultimately, Lynda Day never does reach that conclusion within the series, so (as Murray knows) I had to give her a little help. Kevin "The greatest expression of love is to let go and wish well."
