I reckon this is because in the US it's more common for teenagers to drive cars to school. It certainly isn't common in the UK, at least it wasn't when I was at school 10 years ago. The youngest you can drive in the UK is , I think, 17 years old. In the US I think it's a bit younger, but you can tell me that ! I also get the impression that in the US, it's not uncommon for parents to buy their kids cars as soon as they are legally able to drive. That certainly is not common in the UK, except for very affluent families. The only time we hear of a news team member driving was in QUARTER TO MIDNIGHT, when Julie mentions her car.
