About time I threw my hat into the ring as well. I tuned in eagerly to the
first episode and watched it avidly. As I've said before I used to know
Paul Cornell fairly well a few years back and my friends and I spent many
a drunken evening in his company. He was always talking about the scripts
he had for a childrens show centred around a radio station so it was a
nice closure to finally see it on the screen.
The dialogue was pure Cornell, very cleverly constructed with pretensions
to a higher dimension of humour. That didn't quite come off at times but
I'm confident that would develop. The jokes that read innuendo into justt
about every comment the characters made was a common facet of discussions
down the pub with him so it comes as no surprise that he has worked them
into a script.
The characterisations of the two boys were a subject of interest as well,
if only to see if he had based them on anyone I used to know. Certainly no
one person was in there but they seemed to be composites of the
personalities of a lot of people I went to University with... all will
become clearer as the characters develop... the bit about one of them
being into girls' comics rings a very large bell but nobody I have spoken
to has been able to place it. The one obvious reference was the fact that
one of the directors of the radio station was a Mr Macoustra.... he was a
bloke who was one of Paul's friends and was indeed the director of the
campus radio station during my time at Universirty.
I think the programme is let down slightly by its unrealistic
portrayal of what goes on in a radio station, but then again I'm sure
Press Gang was hardly representative of newspaper life. Just to reassure
people, headphones are always worn when talking, nobody picks up
microphones and nobody plays records - even MOR oldie stations such as the
one City Beat is supposed to represent. Also the programme controller has
absolute power over who is on air and who isn't - that is his job after
all and anyone who was overruled by the directors would walk out instantly.
Here's to tomorrow afternoon...
