To be honest I was quite astonished when I read your message Eavan. I have
always considered that Steven Moffat has been very kind to us by not killing
off characters. I acknowledge that there have been deaths in the series but
they were characters that were introduced with the intention of being
killed. Certainly there were plenty people killed but they were not seen in
other episodes (possibly with the exception of whats-his-name who was seen
with the newsteam when they were watching Spike and Lynda on "Crazy Stuff").
None of main characters were ever killed off. Even if the actor wanted to
leave the show, their characters are not killed off. I have often discussed
this with some pleasure with my cousin and was thinking of writing to the
list about it one of these days. Of course if there was an intention to
never kill of main characters (although I believe at first there was some
talk of killing Spike) the show would be unable to deal with death. However
this problem is solved by the introduction of these "disposable" characters.
I am very grateful that none of our favourites are killed because I probably
would not be able to cope. Especially if it was Kenny, Spike or Lynda. As we
have seen with "Ballykissangel" it is heartbreaking to have any main
characters die. Since the death episode of "ballykissangel" many of my
friends who are fans began to become unsatisfied with it and were annoyed
because the death means that that particular actor will never be able to
come back. It would be much more satisfactory if that character had just
left the village. I believe that "Hamish Macbeth" deals with death a bit
better. When T.V. John died it was more lighthearted almost despite being
sad and the blow was softened somewhat by the fact that he was able to
comeback as a ghost (this also made it amusing). When Alex died it wasn't
that depressing either because it meant that Hamish was free for Isabelle. I
probably sound very unfeeling but I am afraid that that is how I am at the
moment. i have no sympathy for any series that chooses to kill off its main
characters but if they do it must be done in a non sad way.
Emily Hunt (who is sorry for going off the topic but I needed something to
do while trying to find an excuse for not doing homework)
P.S. hello to the new person on the list (sorry I forget your name) who was
born late in 1982. I am quite dissapointed but you are younger than my by a
few months so I am an no longer the youngest on the list.
