Of course, Steven Moffatt was very heavily influenced by American
shows - I can't think of *many* specifics, but he's definitely cited
"Moonlighting" as a major influence on the style of PG. I think
"Hill Street Blues" was mentioned too. I hope none of us - UK, USA,
Aus, or any other nationality on this list - are going to get too
insular about what makes for "good comedy"!
