Kevin replies,
Not a bad analogy at all, except that there are times when I don't think
they really do like each other very much. If Spike really liked the
fighting that much, he wouldn't have packed up and moved to America in
the first place. And as for their fight scenes in the fifth season,
particularly "There Are Crocodiles"....well, you be the judge if that's
two people in love or not.

Yeah, but! I think it a little premature to assume Sarah and Lynda
always remain friends, and that's the linchpin of the argument. You are
100% correct that Sarah would never hurt Lynda by making a play for
Spike. But with the separation Lynda imposes on their relationship, you
might wonder just how friendly they will remain, or indeed how friendly
they are when they part. As for Spike never going for Sarah, that would
be true within the five seasons of "Press Gang" we see. Once again,
don't assume that always remains true. Frazz says that Spike goes for
the bossy types, and while Sarah is pretty much a doormat, Spike is
giving her toughness lessons and she's getting to be a much stronger
person. I expect that growth will continue with her out of Lynda's
orbit. Sarah is fiercely devoted to her principles, is a perfectionist,
and demands excellence in herself. She also is a good arguer when she
gets her dander up. Someday, that might look attractive to Spike, after
Lynda jerks his chain once too often.
